The McMillen Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization which opened its doors in 1981 with generous support from the Harold W. McMillen family, Jim Kelley family, and numerous individuals, foundations, and corporations. The Center was the 2nd independent health education center in the country and is an active member of the National Association of Health Education Centers (NAHEC) and the Northeast Indiana Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (NISTEM) Center.
Our mission is to provide vital, effective, preventive health education that promotes physical, emotional, and social well being.
McMillen has 11 full-time and part-time staff members. Five of these staff members are professional educators that hold a 4-year degree in either education or a health related field.
Admissions cover approximately 25% of the cost. As we do not receive funds from the United Way, the remainder is obtained from grants and personal donations.
The McMillen Center is situated on 11 wooded acres, located at the intersection of US 27 and South Hanna Street on Fort Wayne’s south side. Our 16,000 square foot facility houses 6 themed teaching theaters, a 125 seat auditorium, and the Great Hall where youth are encouraged to take advantage of hands-on exhibits such as the Smoking Cessation Exhibit and the Big Tooth.
